Well, I just got home from bringing Mom home - yes, you read right, home. After running all of her tests today, they 'just realized' one of the medications she is on needs to be stopped three days prior to completing the procedure, so the procedure has been rescheduled to next Tuesday instead of tomorrow...of course this is right after we figured out coverage and I missed a meeting tonight and rescheduled two meetings from tomorrow to what day? yep, yep, next Tuesday.... grr what a roller coaster, but trying to focus on what we can control and not get upset about what we can't. Still just trying to take one day (I mean hour some days) at a time.
Although very weak, Dad seemed to be feeling ok when I dropped Mom off at home. pray his blood test levels are improved when he's re-tested tomorrow am.
Sorry if you called or texted and I did not call/text back yet - it was just a really hectic day trying to finish all I needed to at work after being out and get to the hospital on time.
Big thanks to family and friends who dropped their plans over the last couple of days to bring Mom and Dad to appointments and hospitals and/or who have checked in or helped Dad with his shots/medications...and thank you to all who offered to help and I haven't been able to call or text back today.
Also thanks again for all of the prayers, comments and thoughts - not sure how we'd get through weeks like this without all of you.
...time for bed - I.am.exhausted.
Hi, I'm Aften - Earl's favorite daughter (don't tell Ariel). I'm not a blogger, but decided to put this together 1. To help myself get through this process (selfish I know) 2. To provide a central outlet for information, prayers, encouraging thoughts, jokes and comments (make a few of them sarcastic too - you know how dad likes to BS) and 3. Because I know dad is going to love reading this one day as we look back on this time and say...yeah, that was scary, but you kicked some serious cancer ass!

Update - Mom + Dad
Another update from my previous post today. Mom is being admitted to Barnes tonight. She will have tests tomorrow and likely the procedure to fix her irregular / fast heart rate on Wednesday. More updates throughout the week, but as of right now it is looking like she will be at Barnes for the next 3-4 days. We will be taking shifts to stay with her.
Re: Dad - due to his low white blood count and issues from this morning, he is unable to come to Barnes. He will still be going back to St. Joe's on Wednesday himself for another set of blood tests to check his white count level. In the meantime he is supposed to take it easy, avoid crowds and use ibuprofen for pain. We're also covering visiting him in the evenings (and staying over night a few of the nights if he will let us). He has been ok at home by himself throughout the day, but if you want to stop by and/or check in for a short amount of time throughout the day, I'm sure he would like a visitor here and there. IF YOU DO - just please CALL before visiting to make sure he is up to it and/or there are not too many people stopping by at one time. Also very VERY very important to make sure you are not sick if you stop by - it's really important he not be around anyone who is sick and not be in any crowds right now while his white blood count is down.
sheesh - what a week, is it seriously only Monday? Taking one day at a time, but please keep the prayers coming - we really need them this week.
I'll update tomorrow after work when I get to Barnes - thanks again for everything

Extra Prayers this am - Dad in ER
Update: Dad is out of the ER. He saw his oncologist this afternoon and the hip/leg MRI did not show anything. The Dr. thinks he pinch a nerve in his back that is causing pain in his hip and leg. His white blood count was low when he had his blood tests this morning - the Dr. this is because he has been taking Tylenol for pain? He's going to have him re-tested on Wednesday - hope the levels look better by then. Not having whole body scans for so long makes me really nervous when things like this happen, but the Dr. does not think that the pain is cancer and suggested sticking with the date at the end of the month for whole body scans.
Mom will likely be having a procedure done tonight or tomorrow morning to hopefully fix her heartbeat from racing. Feels like we're too young to be going through all of this with our parents as young as they are, but guess we have to deal with the cards we're dealt and trying as best we can. Please keep the prayers coming and thanks again for everything.
----------------------------
Could use some extra prayers again this am - we've had a great couple of weeks where Dad was feeling good and had a little break in treatment, but his hip and leg started hurting over the past couple of days and after becoming progressively worse, He decided to go to the ER in the middle of the night, concerned about the possibility of another blood clot. They ran a few tests and all came back negative for blood clots. They just took him for an x-ray of his hip and leg to look for other signs of the source of the pain. Naturally with his diagnosis we're concerned the pain is a results of melanoma mets on/in his bones...should hear the results of the x-rays within the next few hours. He also has a sinus infection right now - which for most wouldn't be an issue, but for Dad it makes him feel really weak.
In addition mom's been having some health issues over the past week with her heart beat racing for long periods of time/more than normal - she's being monitored and will have a follow up appointment on Thursday.
We could really use some extra prayers this am. I'll let you know when we have the results of the x-rays.
